Bringing a taste of The Mill to you – Emily Betteridge

If you’ve attended an event The Mill Outside has catered for recently, you’ve more than likely been greeted by the warm and welcoming face of The Mill’s newest team leader, Emily Betteridge.

Emily first started out as a Food Service Assistant at The Mill Café before she was promoted to her new role last month.

Since joining the team in May, a large part of Emily’s role has been working with The Mill Outside, the outside catering arm of St Catherine’s Social Enterprise, the Mill. The team is aiming to have catered for 30 different special occasions in the community this year – their target in the St Catherine’s Hospice 30th anniversary Give A Gift appeal.

The Mill Outside’s most recent event saw part of the team, including Emily, provide the catering at Preston City Council’s Civic Function at the Harris Museum & Art Gallery as ex-Councillors Eric Fazackerley and Bhikhu Patel were made Honorary Aldermen.

“My favourite part is working at events as it’s never the same – you can apply the same skills to all of them, but once it’s gets down to working the event, it’s always different and exciting,” said Emily.

“At the Civic Function we spoke to lots of people about The Mill, about it being a social enterprise, a community hub and a café, and some of them didn’t know that we were linked to St Catherine’s, so it’s great we can be out in the community spreading the word of the café and the hospice.”

Emily’s association with St Catherine’s stems way back to before her time at The Mill. She first volunteered at the Hospice when she was 14, after her Grandma was looked after at the hospice for a short while.

“I loved volunteering for events like the Moonlight and Memories Walk and Symphony at the Tower – so it’s great that I can now be involved in these events as a representative of St Catherine’s.

“I’m looking forward to this new challenge – I’ve always worked front of house in the hospitality industry, so it’s going to be good to now be involved in the marketing, organisation and planning of the events for the Mill Outside a bit more, I’m really excited for it.”

Nicola Hanmer, Commercial Catering Manager at St Catherine’s Hospice and The Mill, said: “Emily’s enthusiasm complements a dedicated and good spirited team here at The Mill. We’re delighted to have her as a Team Leader, and we’re hoping she can help us cater for even more events in the future.

“Not only can we bring the delicious taste of The Mill to events, catering for different occasions is a great way for us to get out in the community and spread the good word of St Catherine’s, as well as all the profits from the Social Enterprise, going back to supporting the specialised care of St Catherine’s Hospice .”
